Election sejm in Warsaw. 1697.

Sejm was convened in March and the pre-sejm sejmiks were held in May of 1697. The Crown Court Chamberlain, Kazimierz Ludwik Bieliński, was elected marshal. Sejm began its proceedings on 15 May 1697. Two French princes (the more important one was the prince Conti) and several German princes took part in the election following king John III Sobieski’s death. The Elector of Saxony, Frederick Augustus I, fell behind at first, as he announced his candidature quite late but thanks to a very energetic and successful diplomatic action and strong-minded actions of his supporters, he was elected the king on 27 June 1697, what was announced by the bishop of Kujawy, Stanisław Dąmbski. He took the opportunity as the primate Michał Radziejowski and Conti supporters’ party left the election field. The sejm finished proceedings on 28 June 1697.
